King's Standing on the first Ordnance Survey map, 1834
Surveyed 1814–17, revised 1831–32, published 1834 (this copy printed 1863) · Perry Barr Common (later Kingstanding), Old Oscott, Banners Gate and Sutton Park edge
The first Ordnance Survey one-inch map (Old Series sheet 62 SE), published 1834. 'Kings Standing' is marked on open Perry Barr Common.
Crop from the Ordnance Survey Old Series one-inch map, sheet LXII SE (Lichfield). The ground that became the Kingstanding estate is shown as Perry Barr Common, still unenclosed heath crossed by Icknield Street (the Roman road). The words 'Kings Standing' sit beside the road, with Kings Vale, Welshmans Hill, Banners Gate, Beggars Bush and the old Oscott College nearby.
Notes
NLS record: surveyed 1814–17, revised 1831–32, this copy printed 1863. The imprint on the sheet reads 'Published at the Tower of London Jan. 9th 1834 by Lieut. Colonel Colby'. The common was enclosed under the 1811 Act (enclosure award 1814), so the open-common lettering may reflect the original survey rather than 1830s land use. Later printings of Old Series sheets had railways added; check the printed railway lines if dating details matter. This crop covers roughly Great Barr to Sutton Park and south to Perry; the full sheet is on the NLS site.
