Kingsland Primary School, 2010
c. 2010 · Kingsland Road
Kingsland Primary School in 2010.
Chris Hillcox’s timeline on Voices of Kingstanding records that the school opened on 23 September 1935 as a joint infant and junior school under Miss E Morris. In March 1937 it was reorganised into separate junior and infant schools, and in August 1937, “owing to a large number of children attending the school (596)”, into Junior Boys and Junior Girls schools, with Mr C Harding OBE heading the boys’ school.
The school was re-amalgamated on 21 February 1957 after Mr Harding’s sudden death; Mr H R O Dowle became head of the junior school when Miss Morris retired in 1960, and the infant and junior schools were joined again at the end of 1969.

Local memories
What people who knew this place have said about it, in their own words. These are memories, not checked facts.
“Loved the hills that were gated in winter, that we could roll over in the summer sometimes. These were really atop of bomb shelters apparently (maybe someone could shine a light on this).”
“Mr penman did take over as head in 81. … We’d had our sports hall rebuilt around the time he started, which had been burnt down by a former pupil.”
“… The school, looking back, was very Welsh – many of the teachers were escapees from the Welsh Valleys, and believed passionately in the power of education to change children’ lives. …”
“… Also recall the Villa players training on Cooksey Lane playing fields as they’d sold the training ground to King Edward’s school in Aston …”
“Yes I did play for the football team, with you Barry. We won the Aston Boys Cup in 1961.”
