Inside the Methodist church hall

The hall of the Methodist church on King’s Road, which was home to the 29th Birmingham Boys’ Brigade company.

Richard Wall writes on Voices of Kingstanding: “I lived in Hurlingham Rd at the time Brian Scott was joining the Boys Brigade the (BB). I would be about 7/8 years old but remember them parading along Hurlingham Rd. Leading them was John Swinburn who I think was the Captain.”

Local memories

What people who knew this place have said about it, in their own words. These are memories, not checked facts.

“I joined the 29th in 1973. There was no anchor boy section at that time and the junior section was run by Geoff Thompson, Dennis Hubbard and John Lycette. Stan Beale was the captain … We went to camp every year. Talybont (on Mr Pugh’s Field), Croyde Bay … I had to leave the BB in 1987 due to work commitments but I will always hold the memories.”

— Russ MArtin, 22 June 2020, Voices of Kingstanding

“I was in the 29th during the 50’s. My brother Joey was, along with Dicky Monk, the first 2 Kings Badge holders.”

— Brian Parkes, 12 December 2014, Voices of Kingstanding

“I can remember the Boys Brigade of a Sunday morning marching up Hornsey Road where I lived.”

— Steve Morton, 19 February 2015, Voices of Kingstanding
