Sir Josiah Mason’s Orphanage, on today’s streets

Josiah Mason’s orphanage on Bell Lane, now Orphanage Road, was begun in 1860, held up to 500 children, and was demolished in 1964. Mason Cottages, almshouses of the 1920s, still stand on part of the grounds.
