A newspaper cutting on The Mount: a private house before the war, then an M&B pub, rebuilt in 1989.

A local newspaper feature with two photographs: the old Mount, a large Edwardian-style brick house, and the low modern pub that replaced it. The text says that before the war the Mount was a private house owned by a German family who were “impounded” for the duration of hostilities; Mitchells & Butlers later turned it into a pub, known to regulars as “The Mat”. Locals nicknamed it “The Spies Pub”. It was demolished in 1989 and rebuilt as The Mount.

Notes

The story is as told in the cutting (“the story goes”); it has not yet been checked against other sources. The newspaper and date of the cutting are not recorded.
