I did not start riding until I was 17, and I was working at I.C.I. as a Laboratory Assistant. I had always loved horses and would stroke the milkman’s horse, and my father would also send me out with a bucket to collect the manure! Riding as a hobby has never been cheap, and I cannot remember who introduced me to the stables at Barr Beacon. They were on the left-hand side of Beacon Road, just past Old Hall Lane, and run by a man called George. On Sunday mornings we used to ride across the Beacon and round the lanes. I loved those rides!
