About 1937/8 I went to the primary school, I always remembered it as Bandywood school now I think it must have been Kingsland. A small island was outside on which a clump of trees grew and in spring lots of daffodils. On each November 11th at 11.00am we all stood in silence in our classroom. Just a year later we collected our gas masks from a house in Queslett Rd. A queue formed, I was so envious of my sister she got a Mickey Mouse one, I got a grown up one. Summer of 1939 was lovely, My mom whistled South of the Border constantly and to be told ‘a whistling woman and a crowing hen are no good to God or men’..
Lovely countryside then, in the lane to Barr Beacon Harebells and Poppies grew in the lane to Barr Beacon.
Filmed for Voices of Kingstanding in 2011, Barry Floyd recalls his family moving to the Kettlehouse Farm estate from central Birmingham in the 1930s, and where his parents came from.
