Around 1943/4 I joined the 29th Birmingham Boys’ Brigade company which was attached to Kings Road Methodist Church. The minister was a Rev Conibear who left to become a missionary in China. We had a very good band – Bobby Betts was the star bugler and Stan (Beefy) Beale played the bass drum. We were at camp at Little Stretton when the news of the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima was announced.
