You might say it was the cultural centre of Kingstanding. The first thing I recall about that was that my mother was the member of an organisation called ‘The Helping Hand’.

As we all know the war started in 1939, my dad went into the army, and stayed there till he was demobbed in 1945, my mum had to work at several low paid jobs to keep my brother and myself clothed.

Around 1943/4 I joined the 29th Birmingham Boys’ Brigade company which was attached to Kings Road Methodist Church. The minister was a Rev Conibear who left to become a missionary in China.

Twickenham Road was completely tree lined right up to these celebrations when most were then cut down to feed the bonfires.
