Both my father and my mother were bowlers and played in the pub teams. Most pubs had bowling greens in those days. At the Kingstanding the green was off to one side, near the King’s Road.

Around 1943/4 I joined the 29th Birmingham Boys’ Brigade company which was attached to Kings Road Methodist Church. The minister was a Rev Conibear who left to become a missionary in China.
