Woolworths, Hawthorn Road. The self-service salesfloor at Woolworth’s, 232–234 Hawthorn Road, which opened on 28 October 1955.

Voices of Kingstanding reproduces this picture and information from the Woolworths Virtual Museum. It says the Hawthorn Road branch “was the first branch in the Midlands to operate the self-service principle”, although the Birmingham District was “highly resistant to instructions from Head Office” to introduce it, and shoppers missed the personal service at each counter.

The same source says the new owners modernised the Kingstanding store and reopened it with a new look on 19 May 1983, using it as a test bed after a computer model highlighted it as a “totally typical suburban store”.
