10th Replacement Depot, Pheasey Estate control point.

The American 10th Replacement Depot occupied part of the Pheasey estate during the Second World War. The board by the control point lists six reinforcement companies. The picture comes from Fran and Martin Collins’s book They Also Serve Who Stand and Wait (Brewin Books).

Local memories

What people who knew this place have said about it, in their own words. These are memories, not checked facts.

“Generally, the layout of the Pheasy Estate is still in tact as it was in the 1940s. But you need to consentrate on the area of the Trees Pub, Queslett Road. To the right and behind the Trees was the US base itself.”

“As a young boy of about 11years I used to visit the army camp and take orders for cakes which I purchased from a shop at corner of Hawthorn Road and Kingstanding Road.I would take cakes back in a wheel barrow.I would pass them through a fence to those who gave me Orders. I would be paid in cash and cigarets which I gave to my father. Happy memories in dark days. Norm Perkins”
