Front row: evacuee billeted on the Delves, June Hogg, evacuee, Rosemary Gledhill (Hickton Rd), evacuee, Margaret Walters (New Street). Couple at front are sisters to Evacuee A.

Brian Scott, who lived in Hartley Road, writes on the Voices of Kingstanding evacuation page that a stray bomb hit the Elan Valley water pipeline, contaminating the water, “so it was decided that there should be evacuation of school children to a safer water area.” His Peckham Road group went by bus to Castle Bromwich station, by train to Alfreton and on to Ironville.

The photograph appears on the page with the recollections of Joan Stratham, who joined Swanwick Junior Girls’ and Infants’ School in 1940; the slate held at the front reads “Swanwick Junior G’s & I’s Council 1941”.

Notes

The photo shows Swanwick in Derbyshire, a reception area for Kingstanding evacuees, not Kingstanding itself.

Local memories

What people who knew this place have said about it, in their own words. These are memories, not checked facts.

“My father, Walter Frank Parsons … lived in Twickenham Road and still remembers his time as an evacuee in Ripley. He was taken in by a lovely family, Raymond and Doris Leary (?), and even went to work in Raymond’s butchers shop after he left school.”

— Susan Baum, 12 February 2024, Voices of Kingstanding

“My Mum was Betty Jones and she lived with her family on Kings Road, Kingstanding … born in 1931 and was evacuated to Alfreton.”
