Peckham Rd senior girls.

From the collection of Phyllis Eastgate, who taught the senior girls at Peckham Road. Her great-niece Julie Eastgate recalls on Voices of Kingstanding: “My great aunt taught the senior girls and did indeed teach German (and was strict but nice). She was pretty good at German and would visit friends over there who were also teachers … They arranged pen-friends between their respective pupils.”

Phyllis Eastgate’s own annotations name some of the girls: top row – Margaret Webb, Ursula Humphrey (née Lawrence) and Audrey; third row from bottom – two Barbaras (the first Robinson), Mary Pritchard, June Davy, Mary or Pauline Stevens; second row from bottom – Sheila Eades, Miss Lemon, Audrey, Mary Tubb; bottom row – Joyce Walton, Barbara Jones, Sheila Gannon.

Notes

Undated on Voices of Kingstanding. Phyllis Eastgate’s annotations leave several girls unnamed (“can’t remember”).

Local memories

What people who knew this place have said about it, in their own words. These are memories, not checked facts.

“I was looking at your photo of Peckham Road senior girls (bow photo). The girl on the 3rd row 2nd from the left (with blonde hair) looks like my auntie. Gillian Nicholls.”

— Janice Catley, 7 June 2014, Voices of Kingstanding

“The blonde young lady is my mother Lily Nicholls not Gillian (her sister) as previously thought.”

— Janice Catley, 9 July 2019, Voices of Kingstanding
