Peckham Road School evacuees, 1941. Miss Bloxham at the back, right-hand side.

Children from Peckham Road School were evacuated from Kingstanding to Derbyshire during the Second World War. The slate in front of this group reads “Swanwick” and “1941 Evacuees”. Voices of Kingstanding names Miss Bloxham as the teacher at the back on the right.

The same photograph was printed in the Ripley & Heanor News on 11 October 2012 (see the separate record of that cutting).

Notes

A reader’s letter in the Ripley & Heanor News, 18 October 2012 (also reproduced on Voices of Kingstanding), says the writer is in “the picture”, names the teachers as Miss Sharpe and Mrs Walters, and mentions Pentrich Council School. The slate in the photograph reads Swanwick.

“We have spent the weekend chatting about her memories of her evacuation to Swanwick. Margaret Garrington lived in Cranbourne Road, Kingstanding. … Margaret is featured in one of the photos, first one, sixth in from the left.”
