The church today

The former Victory Gospel Hall off Kingstanding Circle. William Smith writes on Voices of Kingstanding: “This building was erected on the site about 60 years ago when it was brought from Erdington. The present Church was established in 1985 and Emmanuel Community Church was the name registered with the charity commission in 1990. The church took a major role in the development of community life within the Kingstanding area being involved in starting the Fun Run, continuing the Kingstanding Carnival as well as arranging a number of Fun Days.”

He adds that in 1992 the church moved to the Kingstanding Community Association building next to Wheeldon Recreation Ground, and helped manage it until its forced closure.

Notes

Voices of Kingstanding captions this “The church hall today”; William Smith’s first comment corrects this to the church itself. Commenters disagree about how long the building has stood here.

Local memories

What people who knew this place have said about it, in their own words. These are memories, not checked facts.

“This is not the Church Hall it is in fact the actual Church.”

— William Smith, 31 January 2011, Voices of Kingstanding

“This building in Kettlehouse Road, Kingstanding has been on this site for a lot longer than 60 years. I started to attend the Sunday School at this Victory Gospel Hall when I was 8 years old in 1954 and the building had been there then for a considerable length of time.”

— Gwen Clifford (nee Hutt), 14 November 2012, Voices of Kingstanding

“My late Father’s Grocery Shop was next door, “Allgoods” … I was born while we had the shop in 1944.”

— Mrs joyce pugh, 30 January 2013, Voices of Kingstanding

“I loved going to Victory Gospel Hall. Sunday school and youth group were wonderful places to meet and belong. Dave Sherwin was a fab youth leader throughout the 1970’s. The Miss Evelynnes taught girls class, sewing and knitting.”

— Maria, 13 September 2016, Voices of Kingstanding

“My wife and I got married in the Church on Kettlehouse Road … It is very sad that the building now appears to be quite dilapidated from the outside, with graffiti covering some of the out buildings.”

— Mike Spurr, 23 March 2017, Voices of Kingstanding
