The 1936 murals in the Dulwich Road School hall

c. 2011 (murals 1936) · Dulwich Road

A hall with a parquet floor and three large arched mural panels high on the wall, showing children and young people in the countryside, at workbenches and in a field; heating pipes run across below and a red double door stands at the right. — Image reproduced with permission of Chris Hillcox, Voices of Kingstanding. · Select the picture to zoom and pan.

School mural

The Voices of Kingstanding page on Dulwich Road school in the 1930s says of the murals: “This mural in the sports hall is part of the original school.” The school timeline on the same page records: “April 24th 1936 Murals presented to the school.”

Christine Mullard of Great Barr, a pupil until December 1937, recalls on the page: “It was lovely to watch the mural being painted in the hall – Miss Wallace, our headmistress with girls from different years and classes.”

Notes

Photographed for Voices of Kingstanding about 2011. Christine Mullard thought the mural she remembered was lost when the Girls’ school became a leisure centre; Voices of Kingstanding does not say whether it is one of these panels.
