A dinner at the British Legion “Warriors” club, Lambeth Road, 1940s
1940s · Lambeth Road
Kingstanding British Legion club during the 1940s
Shared with the memories of Dennis Elwell on the Voices of Kingstanding page about the British Legion “Warriors” club on Lambeth Road.
Lesley Harper writes there that her father, Peter Harper, is in the photograph: “I have been told that the gentlemen in the photo actually helped erect the building itself. I recall seeing a photograph of them, including my dad, working on its construction.”
Notes
Voices of Kingstanding does not credit a photographer; it appears under Dennis Elwell’s memories. Commenters give Albert Roberts’s role as both President and chairman.

Local memories
What people who knew this place have said about it, in their own words. These are memories, not checked facts.
“My mom has a copy of this photograph as my dad (Peter Harper) is in it. He is the seventh person towards the back in the row nearest the photographer. Although you can only see part of his face I would recognise that handsome chap anywhere.”
“My dad Vince and mom Elsie Hughes spent many happy evenings at the Warriors. I recognize a few faces on the pic. The tall man at the very back on the right of the pic was Sam Banks. Billy Bonsor is the man sitting between the men standing. I think there is a Chattaway or two as well. No lager I see, only mild and bitter!”
“My grandad, Albert Roberts, also helped to build the Warriors club, and became President of the club and had a room named after him at the club. We had many family parties in the ballroom there.”
“My Grandad is also on there. Him and his son helped build this club as well. He also went on to be the Warriors chairman … The Albert room at the Warriors was named after him. Sadly it has been knocked down now.”
“I remember happy nights at the Legion … my dear uncle Bernard Hall very often sang there and met his wife Jean there. Bernard and his pals Ike Hatch and Bobby Allen did a lot of good work for the legion.”
