Pupils at their desks in Peckham Road School (now Kings Rise Academy), 1932, the school's first years.

Around forty boys and girls sit in rows of wooden double desks, arms folded, in a bright classroom with tall windows and a framed picture on the wall. A boy at the front holds a slate chalked 'VIII', probably the class number.

Local memories

What people who knew this place have said about it, in their own words. These are memories, not checked facts.

Note by Chris Hillcox, Undated (in the page text on Voices of Kingstanding), Voices of Kingstanding

“Miss Bloxham as we called here, was in fact married to , I believe the headmaster of the senior boys, or maybe the Junior school. … Miss Bloxham took the first year class. I can remember crying for my mom, and Miss Bloxham was so kind to me, she sat me up, on what was to me, a very high teachers desk.”

“I can sstill see, in my minds eye, getting my 11+ results and dancing outside the door to the dining room? and waving to my mum.. I can still see , in my minds eye, the wooden class rooms over to the right hand side of the playground … I recall there were two Miss Allens` ?? one was very strict, one was a softer kind of teacher??? … I can recall the School Board Man coming and telling my mum we had played truant..”
