Vegetables on the roof

told by Robert Surch

War Years

I was born on the 21st February 1941, and lived on Kingstanding Road. We had an Anderson shelter at the bottom of the garden next to a large oak tree. My father grew all our vegetables in the back garden. Both my Mother and Father worked at the ICI making ammunition. When the sirens sounded and I was taken down to the air raid shelter. A German bomber was being chased by the RAF, so it dropped its four heavy bombs. The first bomb dropped in our back garden between the shelter and our house. Dad rushed out of the shelter and fell down a great deep hole, the soil was so fine. All his vegetables were on the house roof, and the house windows were blown out. The other bombs were dropped in Hurlingham Road.
