Although, I never remember this being called Conker Island, I certainly remember the pre-fabs. They were built from asbestos sections delivered and assembled on a concrete slab. Inside, they were furnished to a very high standard for the 1940s. Canadian in design with a fitted kitchen and refrigerator as common place they were spacious, light and very modern.
Outside, the island was divided into quad divisions with a footpath running the length and a second across the width. Traffic kept left and right of the island but there was never road sign confirming this obvious instruction.
Kingstanding Swimming Baths was located at the one end, then a few shops, the Catholic school and opposite the metal working classes from Dulwich Road School.
Filmed for Voices of Kingstanding in 2011, Margaret Crompton describes joining the Land Army and the air raids on Kingstanding during the Second World War.
