Most progressive young butcher of the year

told by Keith Moore

Working LifeLocal Businesses

I left school in 1962 to work at W.T. Baker on Hawthorn Road. Ben Billingham was the manager the head office in Cape hill Smethwick used to bake all the pastries with our large family steak and kidney pie being very popular. Loui and Chris served on the pork side and Jim on the beef side. I started as a lad at 15 years old learning the trade through out and becoming the most progressive young butcher of the year out of their 13 shops. It was part of my job to clean out all the fresh turkeys every year it was hard work but I loved it. I progress up to assistant manager I loved the trade and the customers in kingstanding were the best. I left in 1974 to be a milkman at the co op round the corner in Kingstanding Road
