Does anyone remember the two elderly sisters who ran the sweetshop in the row of shops on Brockwell Road? it was opposite the John Bunyan Chapel in the 1960’s and early 1970’s? One was tall and dark and the other shorter with grey hair, very kind and friendly with crisp pale blue overalls. Next door was Carol’s, ladies wear and wool & baby clothes I think. There was also a hairdressers and the ironmongers, with a lovely assistant called Mrs Maud Meek, who lived nearby. You could buy loose paraffin and you would take your own paraffin can, calor gas bottles and replacement elements for your iron or kettle! No waste then!
