Kick the can on the top

told by Joan Crook

Growing Up

We had such a great childhood growing up in Cooksey Lane. Playing out at every opportunity on the ‘top’ or green in front of our house til it got too dark to find any of our mates still hiding after ‘kick the can’ We’d then sit in the entry between the houses and tell ghost stories to each other until mom finally called us in. A quick piece of jam and a cuppa then bed. No central heating, and it was a long time before we had hot water from a tap. We were happy. No computer, no xbox, no electronic games to keep us in. Only a small screen black and white tele but we were perfectly happy with what we had.
