Growing up over Sketchleys

told by Rob Wells

Local BusinessesGrowing Up

If it is one I am thinking of it is Gwyn’s, the alley there was a shoe shop Clarkes, there was another shoe shop can’t remember that one then Gwyns, Smith’s or Rochelle’s the Butchers, then Rumbellows electrical store used to buy my records from there, Stantons, Wrensons food shop,, Miles the pet shop, Cavendish furniture shop, then Johnny Caukins decorators shop. The other side of the alley Timpson, shoe repairers, Woolworths,,Littlewoods, Tranters jewellers,Butchers that changed hand several times, Sketchleys’s (used to live above there) then Boots the Chemist. The other Newsagent was Kirtons (Billy Kirton the footballer) he had 2 shops one at the bottom of Days rd. I can remember nearly all the shops. As I was growing up over Sketchleys cleaners remember the girls used to do my cleaning, used to be going up town Friday and Saturday nights the girls would do a rush job to get my trousers cleaned so I could go out.Don’t remember the sweet shop by scrivens but there was another one by the florist by the snooker hall think it was called the cabin next to the car shop RoadRunner. Remember my mom sending me over to Whittals wine shop with a Sherry bottle to get it filled up never a problem they never asked for ID as I was only about 10 but thats how it was.
