Digging pits on the Pimple

told by John Bolton

Growing Up

I was born in Hurlingham road in 1936. went to Cranbourne Road school and Dulwich Road.(cira 1948-51) then Handsworth Tech. Had part time jobs with co-op butcher on the circle and paper round at Kirtons on Kingstanding Road, (by Lathems the drapers.). Our house back garden was on the fence to the “Pimple” and spent most of our time up there digging pits, making fires, cooking spuds and playing footer on the only bit of flat land at the top. The local bobby was Mr Summers. He lived up the top end of Hurlingham Road. Nice bloke, always fair. I can remember most of the names in our stretch of the road. I also remember the manager of the Home and Colonial Store on Warren Farm Road, by the baths. He would ask the ladies for their divvy number and most of said the wrong thing and he would say” You don’t know if your Maypole or Co-op do you?” Happy days.
