Houses in Newstead road were on small hall stairs straight in from 3 bedrooms, downstairs reasonable size living room and kitchen the bathroom was off the kitchen and the toilet was outside….

I have very fond memories of Kingstanding, having moved there in 1938 from Vauxhall. I was 11yrs old. We lived on the corner of Esher Rd and we could look down Cooksey Lane from our window.

The Kingstanding pub took up the whole corner of the road (Kingstanding Road to King’s road) where the library is. It had a brick arch on the front. It had loads of rooms, smoke rooms, and bars.

As we all know the war started in 1939, my dad went into the army, and stayed there till he was demobbed in 1945, my mum had to work at several low paid jobs to keep my brother and myself clothed.

Twickenham Road was completely tree lined right up to these celebrations when most were then cut down to feed the bonfires.

Did you ever sneak in the back door near the toilets? we used to put all our money together, one would pay to go in and then open the back door for the rest off us.

Remember the dairy next door to the barracks on Kingstanding road, there was about 10 or more magnificent clydesdales they pulled the carts loaded with milk that was delivered all over the area.

I saw lots of 1920’s and 1930’s movies (at the Mayfair). They were all ‘talkies’. Examples would be “The Three Stooges”, the old cow boys and Indian films. Hardly any British films.
