As we all know the war started in 1939, my dad went into the army, and stayed there till he was demobbed in 1945, my mum had to work at several low paid jobs to keep my brother and myself clothed.

Think you might be referring to what we called the “Gully”It lay behind Hurlingham Rd., Sidcup Rd., Danesbury Cres.and Ellerton Rd. A tarmacked path that ran from Sidcup Rd.

Twickenham Road was completely tree lined right up to these celebrations when most were then cut down to feed the bonfires.

Remember the dairy next door to the barracks on Kingstanding road, there was about 10 or more magnificent clydesdales they pulled the carts loaded with milk that was delivered all over the area.

I saw lots of 1920’s and 1930’s movies (at the Mayfair). They were all ‘talkies’. Examples would be “The Three Stooges”, the old cow boys and Indian films. Hardly any British films.

We used to go to the Mayfair on Saturday afternoon. The ‘tupenny crush’ thing. All the kids in there would throw bits of paper at each other. Good fun!

As near as I can remember to get a free pass we had to swim a couple of lengths in a certain time as to prove yourself proficient.
